Blue Crab Dozens Blog

How many steamed blue crabs make a serving?

Scoping out dozens, ½ bushels, and bushels on our website or even at our Brooklyn Park, MD menu board, you may throw your hands up in bewilderment! You ask our crab crew, “How many do I need?” We always follow the customer’s question with two of our own. “How many adults and children will be cracking crabs? Also, “Will you serve sides such as potato salad, shrimp salad, hush puppies, grilled corn, or even steamed shrimp?” Once the customer finalizes the guest list and the menu is all set, then together we can add up the crab selection. The only concern is to make sure you don’t run out!

Keep to these guidelines and your event should go off without a hitch. If your crabs serve as the main event with no sides, 6-8 crabs per adult will work. Young, novice crab newbies like children will typically eat 2-4 crabs. If you plan sides, 4-6 crabs will the suffice for adults and 1-2 crabs for the newbies and children. Once you get these numbers, decide on either full or ½ bushels. You know your crew, so plan accordingly. Let no crab stand uneaten!

Eat with assurance. USA Blue Crabs boast 15-20 grams protein per serving with a serving size at 3 ounces or 85 grams or 1 cup flaked lump meat. Plus, the omega-3s or polyunsaturated fat concentration reads at less than 2 grams, which gives the blue crab a healthy choice rating. A typical crab yields 14% meat with a live crab weighing pound. This “typical crab” or medium, (5”-5½”) or large, (6”-6½”) produces 2 to 2.25 ounces. Yes, many specs for a “Beautiful Swimmer that is Savory.” Savory indeed!

One thing to keep in mind, the salt content ranges between 60 mg and 300 mg of natural salt. Just like all seafood from the ocean or bay, a watchful eye on frequency for the delicacy is key. Plan your crab feasts and cuisine in moderation even though a blue crab sounds great everyday of the week! When preparing blue crabs know that extra salt isn’t needed, so spice in moderation and savor the robust, buttery lump, jumbo, and claw meat.
